The Phillies draw a big test in the opener of their three-game series at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night, as Noah Syndergaard gets the start for the Mets against Philadelphia's Jerad Eickhoff.
This will be the first time either team has played a second series against an opponent in 2016. The Phillies took two of three from the Mets at Citi Field in their second series of the season. They missed Syndergaard, though, on their trip to New York. He made two starts against Philadelphia in 2015, and struck out 15 and allowed two earned runs over 12 1/3 innings.
Eickhoff, also a rookie last season, faced the Mets twice, allowing three runs over 14 innings with 13 strikeouts. He took the loss in his first start of 2016 against New York, lasting five innings and allowing three runs (two earned).
Things to know about this game
• Phillies manager Pete Mackanin trotted out his 12th lineup in 13 games in Philadelphia's series finale Sunday against the Nationals. He's yet to find a combination that works, as the Phillies are averaging just 2.61 runs per game, but they did rally for a 3-2, 10-inning win on Sunday to end the Nationals' seven-game winning streak on Freddy Galvis' walk-off hit.
• This could be a low-scoring series, as the Phillies are 29th in baseball in runs per game, while the Mets are averaging 3.36.
• Syndergaard's 1.46 ERA against the Phillies last year was his lowest against any team he made more than one start against. On the Mets' staff, only Jacob deGrom against the Brewers (0.64) and Orioles (1.23), Bartolo Colon against the Nationals (1.29) and Matt Harvey against the Yankees (1.32) and Reds (1.42) were lower.
