Pirates right-hander Juan Nicasio will make his third start of the season Sunday at PNC Park in the rubber match of a series with the Brewers, who recalled prospect Zach Davies to make his 2016 debut.
In Nicasio's first two starts, the Pirates saw both the dominant pitcher who earned a rotation spot this spring and the inconsistent starter who often struggled with the Rockies.
Nicasio, who struck out 24 batters in 15 scoreless innings in Spring Training, held the Cardinals to one run on two hits and struck out seven over six scoreless innings on April 6. In Detroit on Tuesday, he battled through a three-inning, five-walk outing in which he allowed four runs.
Nicasio is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in four career appearances, including two starts, against Milwaukee.
For the Brewers, it's the first time they need a fifth starter this season, and Davies will take the rotation spot that opened when Matt Garza (strained right lat) was placed on the 15-day disabled list at the end of Spring Training.
Davies started the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he went 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in two starts.
He made his Major League debut vs. Pittsburgh on Sept. 2 at Miller Park and received no decision in the Brewers' 9-4 win. His other start came in a 10-2 loss on Sept. 12 at PNC Park.
Things to know about this game
• The Pirates will unveil this season's throwback uniforms on Sunday, bringing back the black and gold jerseys worn by the 1979 World Series champions. During all remaining Sunday home games this season, the Pirates will wear the classic gold tops and black pants along with pillbox style caps.
• Ryan Braun has 29 career homers against the Pirates, which is the most vs. Pittsburgh by any player in team history.
• The Brewers sent outfielder Keon Broxton to Triple-A Colorado Springs in a corresponding roster move for Davies. Broxton was 0-for-16 to open the season. He will get a chance to play on a regular basis at Triple-A.
