Two right-handers each seeking their first win of the season will square off on the mound when the Braves try to complete a three-game series sweep of the Marlins on Sunday afternoon at Marlins Park.
Jhoulys Chacin will try to follow up a solid outing against Washington on Tuesday, when the Braves starter tossed six shutout innings that included eight strikeouts while allowing only five hits, all singles. He ended up with a no-decision.
The Marlins will counter with Jarred Cosart, who also took a no-decision in his only other previous start this season, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings on Monday against the Mets.
"We got the first one out of the way," Cosart said after the Marlins' victory in New York.
The Braves got their first win out of the way Friday before winning again on Saturday. They definitely will leave Miami feeling better than when they arrived with a nine-game losing streak.
"I think it loosens us up a lot," first baseman Freddie Freeman said on Friday.
As for the Marlins, they enter the series finale looking for home win No. 1 after dropping the season-opening set to the Tigers and these first two games to the Braves.
Three things to know about this game
• Cosart has enjoyed success against the Braves, against whom he is 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 21 2/3 innings. He struggled with his offspeed pitches, however, against the Mets.
• The last time Chacin registered a win against the Marlins was Aug. 23, 2013, when he pitched for the Colorado Rockies. He did not face Miami last season.
• Braves right fielder Nick Markakis has been a menace against the Marlins since manager Fredi Gonzalez moved him into the leadoff spot for this series. Markakis tied the game with an RBI single that sparked a 6-3 comeback win Friday night, and on Saturday, he delivered singles in his first two at-bats, including a clutch two-run bloop single to left that staked Atlanta to a 2-0 lead, before hitting an RBI double in his third at-bat.
