Rookie right-hander John Gant will make his second career start when the Braves open a three-game series against Matt Harvey and the Mets on Friday at Citi Field.
The 23-year-old went 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Cubs on Sunday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
"He kept the game manageable, which is the biggest thing," Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said after that start. "He didn't let it get out [of hand]. It was still manageable, and we had enough innings to come back. He did a good job, battled through a lot and did a good job of keeping the game there against one of the best teams in baseball."
Harvey allowed one run on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over six innings in the Mets' win over the Brewers on Friday to continue his string of strong starts. The 27-year-old has allowed two runs over 20 innings in his past three outings.
"The fastball wasn't obviously coming out as great as it has been the last couple of starts, but I pretty much had everything else working," Harvey said after Friday's game. "I was able to keep them off balance and get us through six innings."
Things to know about this game
• Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski is 5-for-6 with a double in his career against Harvey. Outfielder Mallex Smith is 3-for-4 with a home run off the righty, while first baseman Freddie Freeman is just 2-for-12 with two doubles.
• Mets third baseman David Wright has opted for surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck. While there is no timetable for his return, he could miss the rest of the season.
• The Braves called up Tyrell Jenkins, their eighth-ranked prospect by MLBPipeline.com, on Thursday. The 23-year-old saw action in 14 games (nine starts) with Triple-A Gwinnett, posting a 6-3 record and a 2.91 ERA.
