After parts of two strong seasons with the Rays, left-hander Drew Smyly (2-7, 4.78 ERA) has struggled to find that form in 2016, especially since May.
But in five starts within the American League East, Smyly has found success. He's 2-2 with a 2.52 ERA in the division, and he will look to build on that success when he gets the ball in the series finale Sunday against the Orioles for his first start against the club this season.
In eight career games (five starts) vs. the O's, who will look to sweep the four-game series, Smyly is 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA. He's been especially good at Camden Yards, where he has a 0.82 ERA.
"I enjoy pitching at every stadium, but I've had good success here," Smyly said. "Hopefully I can keep it going. I don't know what it is. It's always a pretty good atmosphere and a fun place to play."
The Orioles will send right-hander Tyler Wilson (3-5, 4.19 ERA) to the hill in their final game before they head on a three-city West Coast trip. He scattered nine hits to record his second straight quality start in his last outing.
The 26-year-old Wilson will be making his second career start against the division-rival Rays.
Three things to know about this game
• Orioles center fielder Adam Jones and first baseman Chris Davis are a combined 4-for-34 (.118) against Smyly in their careers, but three of the four hits have been home runs.
• Smyly has allowed at least four runs in four of his past five starts, but he was superb June 15 against the Mariners. In that outing, Smyly struck out 12 batters in 6 2/3 innings while allowing two runs.
• After both teams were allowed to add a 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader, the rosters will be back to the normal 25 for the final game of the series.
