A's ace Sonny Gray makes his second start of the year when the Angels arrive in Oakland for the start of a three-game series on Monday, with game time set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
Gray, scratched from his Opening Day start because of food poisoning, limited the White Sox to one run in seven innings in a win on Wednesday, pitching around three hits and four walks. The 26-year-old right-hander will be opposed by Nick Tropeano, called up by the Angels to take the rotation spot of an injured Andrew Heaney (left forearm tightness).
Tropeano pitched to a 3.82 ERA in 37 2/3 innings in the Majors last year, striking out 38 and walking 10. He started twice against the A's last year and limited them to just one run in 12 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out 16 batters.
Gray, third in American League Cy Young Award voting last season, has a 3.18 ERA in 70 2/3 career innings against the Angels.
Three things to know
• The Angels have won eight of their last 11 games against the A's, including four of their last five and 17 of their last 24. They won five of nine in Oakland last year. Since 2002, the Angels and A's have claimed 11 of the 14 American League West titles.
• A's designated hitter Billy Butler could sit a fifth straight game against a right-hander Monday, though the team isn't ready to say he's in a strict platoon. Butler is expected back in the lineup Tuesday, with the Angels scheduled to start a lefty in Hector Santiago.
• Left fielder Daniel Nava has been nursing a laceration on his left index finger since Friday night, an ailment that has prevented him from throwing. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Nava "should be" ready to start on Monday, with a righty on the other side.
