Right-hander Kris Medlen looks to take another step forward in his recovery from Tommy John surgery when the Royals conclude their seven-game road trip against Chris Bassitt and the A's on Sunday at the Coliseum.
Medlen (1-0) had seven strikeouts in his season debut against Houston on April 12. It was his most strikeouts since Sept. 27, 2013, his final start before undergoing surgery that forced him to miss all of 2014 and the first half of '15.
Bassitt is carrying a respectable 2.92 ERA into the game though he has yet to earn a decision this season. The right-hander has allowed four earned runs in 12 1/3 innings, but the A's have scored just four runs with him on the mound.
Things to know about this game
• Medlen spent his first five seasons in the National League and will be facing the A's for the first time in his career. That leaves the Angels, Mariners, Rangers and Braves as the only teams he has yet to pitch against.
