The Padres continue their string of drawing tough pitchers when facing D-backs righty Shelby Miller on Saturday night, the second outing of their three-game series at Petco Park.
San Diego has already lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw and Scott Kazmir. On Thursday, the Philadelphia Phillies' emerging ace, Vince Velasquez, fanned 16 Padres in a shutout win.
The Padres get Miller one game after facing Zack Greinke.
"They got a great rotation going against us this weekend,'' Padres manager Andy Green said. "The challenge is large and we are going to have to rise up and meet it.''
Miller (0-1, 8.18 ERA) is making his third start since Arizona acquired him from the Atlanta Braves in a package which cost them former No. 1 draft pick Dansby Swanson.
The Padres counter with Andrew Cashner (0-1, ERA 8.00), who had a rocky first start at Petco Park when surrendering five runs in four innings in a loss to the Dodgers.
Green is competing against Arizona, his former club, for the second time.
"For me the stakes are a little higher than normal,'' he said. "But it's really just baseball at the end of the day.''
Things to know about this game:
• San Diego is hopeful Cashner can build on his last outing. Cashner worked five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in the Padres' victory over the Phillies on Monday.
• In Miller's five career games against the Padres (four starts), he is 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA. Both of those decisions came in appearances at Petco Park.
