Right-hander Sonny Gray will attempt to end his losing streak against Kansas City, while the Royals will counter with Chris Young when the two teams play the second game of this three-game series Saturday.
Gray (1-1) pitched well in his last outing except for a hiccup in the sixth when he gave up three runs, including a towering two-run home run to the Angels' Mike Trout. Oakland's ace also had control problems and has walked seven batters in 13 1/3 innings.
The Royals are one of two teams in the American League that Gray has not defeated. He is 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA in three career appearances against Kansas City.
Young (0-2) is trying to get a win, period. The 36-year-old right-hander hasn't made it past the fifth inning in either of his previous two starts and was tagged for six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in his most recent outing against Houston.
Things to know about this game
• Young is 3-1 lifetime at the Coliseum, but just 4-4 overall in 11 appearances against the A's. He has a career 3.48 ERA against Oakland.
• Outfielder Billy Burns is the only A's player without a strikeout. He has 26 plate appearances, the most in the Majors without a strikeout.
• The Royals have been the winningest road team in the Majors since 2013 and are putting another solid streak together away from Kaufman Stadium in their first road trip this season.
