Baseball, they say, is a game of adjustments. Marlins lefty Adam Conley and Mets right-hander Logan Verrett are getting their routines tested early this year.
Both starters for Wednesday's 1:10 p.m. ET finale at Citi Field had been on standby regarding when they were scheduled to pitch.
Verrett is getting the nod for his first start of the season because Jacob deGrom was pushed back due to a sore right lat and his wife gave birth to their first child. Conley is going in place of Wei-Yin Chen, who is set to throw in Miami on Friday against Atlanta.
In his first start last Thursday at Washington, Conley worked just one inning and threw 31 pitches before an 85-minute rain delay. The game was completed, but Conley's night was through. He was a possibility to throw either out of the bullpen at Washington or start Monday at New York.
"You just roll with the punches because it's that time of the year," Conley said. "You know stuff like this is going to come up with the weather."
Verrett, 25, has seen action in one game, tossing an inning of relief on Sunday against the Phillies. Spot-starting is nothing new for the right-hander, who appeared in 18 games with four starts in 2015.
Three things you need to know
• Marlins manager Don Mattingly said on Monday he planned on giving bench guys some starts this series, and he did so on Tuesday, going with Derek Dietrich at third base for Martin Prado. Prado has hit safely in his first five games. He is expected back at third on Wednesday. J.T. Realmuto, also off on Tuesday, is slated to catch Conley.
• Mets right fielder Curtis Granderson snapped an 0-for-20 slump in the first inning on Tuesday with his double to right.
• David Wright is 2-for-3 with a double in his career off Conley.
