Veteran lefty Wade Miley returns from the disabled list on Wednesday night to lead the Mariners against the Pirates and highly touted rookie Jameson Taillon in the finale of a two-game Interleague series at Safeco Field. Seattle won the opener, 5-2.
Miley has been out since June 12 with a left shoulder impingement. As a part of his rehab, the lefty threw four scoreless innings for Class A Advanced Everett Friday, striking out seven.
"I know he was struggling with the shoulder issues there, his last couple starts, and just wasn't himself," said Mariners manager Scott Servais. "So getting him out there healthy and not thinking about how his shoulder feels, it'll be nice."
Taillon will be making his fifth big league start. The second-overall pick in the 2010 Draft made his Major League debut on June 4 and has a 4.50 ERA. Wednesday will be his first start against an American League team.
Things to know about this game
• Taillon threw eight scoreless innings on June 14 against the Mets, but in each of his past two starts he lasted only four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.
• Nathan Karns could enter the game as a reliever. With Miley and Taijuan Walker healthy and back in the starting rotation, the Mariners are moving Karns to the bullpen, Servais said Tuesday.
• This is not the last time the Mariners and Pirates will see each other this season. They face off in Pittsburgh July 26-27.
