Coming off a down start against the Rockies, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia (5-4, 2.71 ERA) hopes to get back on track against the Rangers on Tuesday. He'll pitch opposite fellow southpaw Cole Hamels (8-1, 2.79 ERA), who has never recorded a win against the Yankees.
New York is one of four teams Hamels has never beaten (he's never faced his former team, the Phillies), and he's recorded a 4.50 ERA against them in three starts. He enters the game riding a wave of success, though, having allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his past five starts.
Sabathia had established himself as the Yankees' most reliable starter before his last outing. He allowed six runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. He rolled his ankle twice during the start, but X-rays came back negative and he threw his normal bullpen session Saturday without issue.
Things to know about this game
• In 21 career starts against the Rangers, Sabathia is 11-5 with a 4.97 ERA, the 12th-highest ERA for any pitcher with at least 20 career starts against the Rangers since 1972.
• The Rangers have had plenty of success against left-handers this season. Ryan Rua entered Monday leading the American League with a .400 batting average versus lefties, while Ian Desmond (.392) was third and Elvis Andrus (.381) was fourth.
• Brian McCann is 17-for-61 off Hamels in his career. That's the sixth-most at-bats by an opponent. He's also one of four left-handed hitters with more than two homers against Hamels.
